DAMASCUS, SYRIA (3:05 P.M.) – The media wing of the Egyptian Armed Forces published footage earlier today, showing sorties conducted against jihadist militants in sparsely populated eastern desert areas of the country.

The Egyptian Air Force (EAF) carried out a number of air raids on the northern and central parts of the Sinai Peninsula, striking suspected ISIS hideouts over the past week:

19 Islamic State combatants were killed, a spokesperson in the Egyptian Army said.

Meanwhile, ISIS has bombed several Coptic Churches in Egypt after vowing to attack the Christian minority and continues to conduct hit-and-run operations in the Sinai governorate, even establishing checkpoints in its provincial capital.

Egypt’s economy relies heavily on tourism; effectively, defeating the Islamic State insurgency is of utmost military and financial importance.

Morally yes. But militarily they are fought as insurgents, and operationally these are counter-insurgency operations.
