The President of the National Constituent Assembly denied reports that Russia was planning on constructing a military base in Venezuela, as he gave a speech in Caracas on Tuesday.
“I wish it were true. Not one. But two, three, four, ten,” Diosdado Cabello said.
“It’s not the Russians. We are the ones who want this country, we are the patriots who are going to defend this country in good times and in bad times.”
Rumours of a Russian military installation being constructed some 200km (124mi) from Caracas on the island of La Orchila had previously been reported.
