BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:45 A.M.) – The Wall Street Journal claimed on Sunday that the U.S. military had decided to keep nearly 1,000 soldiers inside Syria, which is more than double than the previous number reported by the U.S. administration last month.

However, shortly after the WSJ report went live, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff  General Joseph Dunford said in a statement that these claims were in fact false.

“A claim reported this evening by a major U.S. newspaper that the U.S. military is developing plans to keep nearly 1,000 U.S. troops in Syria is factually incorrect,” General Dunford said.

“There has been no change to the plan announced in February and we continue to implement the President’s direction to draw down U.S. forces to a residual presence.”

According to General Dunford, the U.S. will “conduct detailed military planning with the Turkish General Staff to address Turkish security concerns along the Turkey-Syria border.”

“Planning to date has been productive and we have an initial concept that will be refined in the coming days,” he said.

“We are also conducting planning with other members of the Coalition who have indicated an intent to support the transition phase of operations into Syria,” General Dunford added.

@Sweet Robert, and I believe the general. He finally admitted that the US has no plans. I had this impression already long ago.

Yes I think most if not all or close to it of the regular military will leave . However that other group will have their own agenda too follow and most likely choose too continue with their plans regardless .

Oh they had plans to overthrow the Syrian government by way of a variety of proxies mercenaries. They did not achieve this due to Putin’s interventions. They do not disclose the number of American soldiers killed either as they fear protests. They are lying and no one actually knows the number of troops anywhere. We had fan of covert ops Lame Obama and now we have clueless Trump.

Or they are using Al Tanf and that other base in North eastern Syria as training camps and bases for operations in Iran . By having a buffer zone all around and no government access away from the Jordanian / Iraqi borders so they can’t see what is going on either and the strong reluctance to give up the areas with no ISIS remotely anywhere near there does suggest all is not kosher there.

US officials already refuted what WSJ journo wrote… WSJ is OK to talk about stock exchanges and what happens in NYC… About anything else, don’t hope anything serious from ’em…

When one reads the US statement carefullly, it does not rule out that say 800 staying or say 1500 staying could be factually correct. Just that app 1.000 is factually incorrect. I think in the end some 500 to 800 will leave and that french and UK military will totall 500. Maybe even a few Dutch, but unlikely at the moment.

You are correct about your name. However, even if true, better to be a lackey to the US than a soullous puppet of Russia and Iran.

He is not even invited to talk about opening highways, border posts. He has not even control of the regions under his nominal control. He is just a puppet, ever more irrelevant.

He f*cked the whole thing up by inviting the Iranians and Hezb, then Putin. The best and lest costly [in anything] move he could have done? Calling Netanyahu! And I’m not joking!

Assad will die. Then US soldiers will go back to the US – dead.
