BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:30 A.M.) – Turkey is deporting an ex-Guantanamo Bay detainee to Syria after being caught with a forged identity card, Sputnik News Agency reported on Monday.
According to the Sputnik News report, Jihad Diab traveled to Turkey from Brazil in June while using a Moroccan passport and forged identity card.
The former Al-Qaeda was then subsequently deported to Syria after he was captured by the Turkish security forces.
Diab, 47, was imprisoned for 12 years at the Guantanamo Bay camp, but was never charged with a crime.
In 2014, the government of Uruguay reached an agreement with the US authorities on the transfer of a number of former detainees from the Guantanamo to Uruguay.
In the last three and a half years, he made four attempts to get to Turkey where his wife, three sons and a grandson are residing.
