According to an official, a court in Iraq sentenced three French residents to death after they were found guilty of joining the Daesh* terrorist group.
Kevin Gonot, Leonard Lopez and Salim Machou were captured in Syria by a US-backed group fighting the terrorists.
They are the first French Daesh members to receive death sentences in Iraq, where they were transported to for the court trial.
In 2014, vast swathes of Iraq were seized by Daesh. At the end of 2017, then-Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi declared an end to the country’s fight against the terror group as Iraqi troops re-established complete control over the country’s border with Syria.
