Hours after dusk, a big ISIS contingent launched a massive offensive on the Palmyra Silos region in east Homs.
Leading this unexpected attack was the highly-experienced Islamic State emir of the ‘central region’ Abu Turab.
Veteran Syrian Army units stationed on the fringes of the Palmyra Silos thwarted the attack after a few hours of intense firefights killing the aforementioned emir along with 60 of his fighters. Russian helicopters played a significant role in foiling the disastrous offensive.
Reportedly, the Syrian Army grouping in Palmyra was massing in preparation for a huge offensive on Deir El Zor. However, the events in Aleppo forced many units to relocate to the northwestern province to counter the Al Qaeda-led offensive.
Any offensive planned for Deir El-Zor is most likely postponed until the Aleppo situation is resolved.
