BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:55 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army has deployed an entire artillery division worth of fire support assets in preparation for a major offensive operation against militant groups in the East Ghouta region of Damascus.

Among the vast array and great number of army fire support weapons that have arrived in Damascus (and continue to arrive) are medium and heavy howitzers (both self-propelled and towed), field guns, heavy mortars, Elephant rocket throwers and Grad rocket launchers.

Although all the artillery comes from different units of the Syrian Army, the sheer amount of it (which remains classified for now) and its concentration into a single operation is essential the equivalent of a Cold War-era Soviet artillery division used to support corps and army-level operations.

The deployment of such firepower is obvious – the Syrian Army intends to completely pulverize militant defenses, using sheer support fire as a breakthrough method in and of its own right.

They need do pulverize both the first and second defense line at the same time. Because during WW2 Germans knew that Soviets will heavily bombard the German first line of defence before storming and moved all the troops from first to second defense line before bobmardment began…

During second half of WW2 Soviets knew that Germans will move to second defense line before bombardment began, so they heavily bombarded both lines of defense.

Did not You realize he implied – that it must be done thus?

p.s. Moving to another line that must be also covered with fire at least halves the impact. So what?
