BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:15 P.M.) – US President Donald Trump arrived at the NATO HQ in Brussels ahead of the NATO Summit on Wednesday.

Trump was welcomed by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, with whom he had had breakfast earlier in the day.

The NATO Summit takes place in Brussels from July 11-12.

Chaired by Stoltenberg, the summit is set to discuss the most urgent issues for NATO members concerning international security and military affairs.

Transatlantic trade agreements as well as the US withdrawal from both the global climate pact and Iran nuclear deal are on the summit’s agenda, as well as member states’ defence spending contributions.

We – EU countries – do not PAY enough and we DO business with the “evil” Russia instead of the good old crazy USA.

I believe there are good Americans who see and know that “their” politicians

With this, i do not like the “USA” anymore. ,

Time to wake up.

“We – EU countries – do not PAY enough” => He’s not totally wrong since most of NATO (and not EU, since there are non-EU countries in NATO, e.g. Norway, and some EU countries are not in NATO, e.g. Eire or Austria) are under 2% of GDP going to defence purposes as they agreed in the post cold-war NATO treaty. It’s not sums to be paid to USA, thus it’s clear he also wants to place US gear, so yeah, most of the NATO countries are really “freeloading” on USA which are far over 2% of their GDP but more… Read more »

I must add that US isn’t spending so much for EU defence :
https://www.iiss.org/-/media/images/comment/military-balance-blog/2018/july/figure-3-us-direct-spending-on-european-security.ashx?h=615&la=en&mw=865&w=865&hash=3ED27904E43816349A4A4443919ACEFFF68D1EF0
And the only time art.5 of NATO charter (mutual defence) was activated, it was on the behalf of USA, after 9-11…
Thus US contribution to the alliance is not so huge Trump is pushing up…

Partially agree. The problem is not NATO but the US. US is spending way too much money on overseas military excursions and needs to scale back. Russia is not a threat and EU army not necessary.
