BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:50 A.M.) – The United Nations (UN) General Assembly overwhelmingly adopted a resolution offering ‘protection for Palestinian civilians living under occupation’ and deploring the use of ‘indiscriminate force by Israeli forces’ in Gaza, at a session in New York on Wednesday.
Loud applause greeted the outcome of the vote.
An amendment proposed by the United States, which asked members to name Hamas as responsible for the deaths, failed, despite receiving 62 votes in favour and 58 against, because it did not obtain the required two-thirds majority.
Ahead of both votes, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley had called the resolution “totally one-sided” and said members “favourite political sport” was attacking Israel.
