BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:30 P.M.) – The arrest of a Druze opposition leader in Al-Sweida brought about an armed conflict last night between a group of locals and the Syrian military intelligence.
According to local reports, a group of locals stormed the Syrian military intelligence headquarters on Sunday evening after they accused the latter of arresting the opposition activist, Muhannad Shahebeddine, in Sweida city.
The locals then seized the military intelligence building and took at least ten officers hostage.
The following day, the locals agreed to release the officers and leave the area after negotiating with the Syrian government.
On Monday, the locals have warned of another attack against the military intelligence forces if Shahabeddine is not released.
The situation in Sweida still remains tense between the military intelligence forces and the locals loyal Shahabeddine.
