BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:10 P.M.) – The Turkish-backed rebels scored a new advance in the Afrin region of Aleppo, today, following a short battle with the Kurdish-led YPG forces.
Led by the Free Syrian Army (FSA), the rebels seized the town of Qarmanlaq in western Afrin after the Turkish Air Force hammered the YPG’s positions for several hours on Monday morning.
Since capturing Qarmanlaq, the Turkish-backed rebels have turned their attention to the key district of Sheikh Hadid.
If the Turkish-backed forces manage to capture all of Sheikh Hadid, they will open the road between their areas in Aleppo and Idlib.
According to opposition activists, this advance could be worrying due to the current infighting with Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham in both Idlib and Aleppo.
Opposition activists are worried that HTS may attempt to infiltrate the FSA’s areas in Aleppo using this road in order to avenge the Turkish-backed rebels for their recent attacks against them.
