BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:10 P.M.) – The Islamic State (ISIS) launched a large-scale counter-offensive against the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the Badiya Al-Sham region of Al-Sweida on Wednesday.

ISIS began the attack on Wednesday by attempting to overwhelm the Syrian Arab Army troops near the large hilltop of Tal Barakat.

For a few hours, the Islamic State repeatedly struck the Syrian Army’s defenses at Tal Barakat in a bid to overwhelm the pro-government troops.

However, the Islamic State’s assault would eventually lose momentum by sundown, forcing them to withdraw back into this vast desert region in southeast Syria.

According to a military report, the Syrian Army, alongside their allies from Hezbollah and the National Defense Forces (NDF), was able to reestablish full security around Tal Barakat.

The report added that scores of Islamic State terrorists were killed during this brief battle on Wednesday.

Since launching their southeast Syria offensive, the Syrian Army and their allies have liberated a large chunk of territory in the Badiya Al-Sham region, putting them within striking distance of the Islamic State’s stronghold, Al-Kara’a.

If the Syrian Army can take control of Al-Kara’a, the remaining Islamic State terrorists will likely be forced to take refuge in the large number of caves in the region.
