BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:20 P.M.) – The jihadist rebels launched a new attack in southern Aleppo on Wednesday that targeted the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) positions near the strategic Aleppo-Damascus Highway (var. M-5).
Led by Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, the jihadist rebels opened fire on the Syrian Arab Army’s posts that were located northwest of Khan Touman.
In response, the Syrian Arab Army fired several missiles and artillery shells towards the jihadist rebels at the town of Khan Touman; this would result in a brief exchange.
The gunfire and missile exchange would later dissipate after more than 30 minutes of intense clashes at this front in southern Aleppo.
The reason for the jihadist attack on the Syrian Army’s positions is still unknown at this time.
A source from the Syrian military said that the army did not provoke the attack, nor were they expecting any assault from the jihadist rebels.
