BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:05 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) caught the Islamist rebels of Jaysh Al-Islam off guard in the East Ghouta, yesterday, seizing at least three towns and one large hilltop in the eastern part of this farming region in Damascus.

However, by mid-afternoon on Sunday, Jaysh Al-Islam was able to halt the Syrian Arab Army’s progress in the East Ghouta, as their reinforcements provided much needed relief to their forces on the front-lines.

In particular, the Islamist rebels of Jaysh Al-Islam were able to reassert control over the town of Hawsh Dawahra after a series of intense firefights with the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Mechanized Division and 106th Brigade of the Republican Guard.

The Syrian Arab Army has already begun firing missiles and artillery shells into the eastern half of the East Ghouta this morning, but no storming has been reported thus far.

More details to come as the battle progresses…
