BEIRUT, LEBANON (1:05 A.M.) – A deputy head of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards said short-range Iranian missiles could reach U.S. warships in the Gulf, and the United States could not afford a new war, the semi-official news agency Fars reported on Friday.

The comments added to days of sabre-rattling between Tehran and Washington, which has tightened sanctions and built up its military presence in the region alleging threats from Iran to its troops and interests.

Iran has accused the United States of “psychological warfare” and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said this week Tehran would not negotiate another deal after Washington quit a 2015 pact over Iran’s nuclear program.

“Even our short-range missiles can easily reach (U.S.) warships in the Persian Gulf,” Mohammad Saleh Jokar, the Guard’s deputy for parliamentary affairs, was quoted by Fars as saying.

“America cannot afford the costs of a new war, and the country is in a bad situation in terms of manpower and social conditions,” he added.

Separately, a senior Iranian military official accused U.S. President Donald Trump of dishonesty, the semi-official news agency Mehr reported on Friday.

Trump has said publicly he wants to pursue a diplomatic route after withdrawing from the 2015 deal and moving to cut off all Iranian oil exports this month.

“The actions of American leaders in exerting pressure and launching sanctions … while speaking of talks, is like holding a gun at someone and asking for friendship and negotiations,” said Rasoul Sanai-Rad, a political deputy of the armed forces’ command, Mehr reported.

“The behavior of American leaders is a political game which consists of threats and pressure while showing a willingness to negotiate in order to present a peaceful image of themselves and fool public opinion,” Sanai-Rad added.

Guards deputy Jokar was also quoted by Fars as making remarks apparently directed against any calls for talks by allies of pragmatic President Hassan Rouhani.

“The Western-leaning tendency in the country raises a war versus talks dilemma … and is trying to impose new nuclear deals on the country,” he said.

Growing U.S. pressure on Iran has weakened Rouhani and made his hardline rivals more assertive.

Propaganda for internal consumption only.

Iran lacks the military potential to saturate a single carrier fleet.

Yes the US are not trustworthy after stepping back from the nuclear deal.

Iran is not Irak in 1991..then Iraqi forces had only 150 Scud and launched 60 of them along one month…Iran have around 10.000 ballistic missile with more accurate Cep..and can launch at the same time 100 vs Qatar airbase which obviusly Patriot AD cannot intercept all of them..it a matter of matematics…

10,000 ballistic missiles???????????? Hey, USA+China+Russia+EU haven’t 10,000 cumulated ballistic missiles ???????????? ++++ “and can launch at the same time 100 vs Qatar airbase which obviously Patriot AD cannot intercept all of them” => A Patriot battalion = six “line batteries”, each line battery consists of six launchers, each launcher has 16 missiles loaded. With 10,000 personnels + families on the base, I doubt the Yanks only deployed a single battalion and be sure THAAD is around too, moreover, US bought several Iron-Dome batteries in 2018 and in their place, I know where I would deploy it. There is also the… Read more »

Iran has the 4th strongest and potent missile deterrent in the world with increasingly precise and accurate missiles and there is no doubt that Iran can and will inflict serious damage to any insane attacker. Trump is a typical loudmouth arrogant so-called “American” enslaved to Zionist warmongers and global plunderers, who now understands that a war with Iran will be a total disaster for a spread thin US, already bogged down in the region and embroiled in a losing economic war with resurgent China as economic and strategic power shifts to Asia, Russia, Iran, Turkey and other independent nations. US… Read more »

“Iran has the 4th strongest and potent missile deterrent in the world” => Nope. They don’t even make it to the Top-10… “with increasingly precise and accurate missiles” => Any NATO country was at such level 40 if not 50 years ago… Moreover, the missiles with potential are all land based and under 24/7 watch, they all already have 1 or 2 cruise missile with their name on… And don’t hope for S-300 to be effective : even if the early warning radars may “see” F-22, F-35, or B-2, these are not fit to lock on such targets. Early warnings… Read more »

@Daeshbags-Sux, while your assessment of economic capabilities which tend to decide war is IMHO correct, I cannot accommodate myself with your animadversion against Iran’s complete leadership. There is hope and EU opinion leaders are against an all out confrontation and pro maintaining the nuclear deal with Iran.

This will support the more sane part in Iran.

Americans are boastful and war mongers. Like Ylya said. But so are the representatives of the revolutionary guard.

Khamenei and the IRGC are leading the country. Rouhanni and the parliament are just here to look good.
At the same time Rouhanni was in Europe, well, you arrested the #3 of Iranian embassy in Austria when he returned from Belgium after having delivered TATP to a Quds-Force sleeper cell, in order to make an attack in France…
I make myself no illusions : Khamenei and his thugs are seriously into eschatology. The options are simple for them : either they surrender, and so will look weak and face a revolution soon, or…
Dying as a martyr guarantees them their 72 virgins…

@Daeshbags-Sux, their midrash on eschatology is faulty. 72 white wine grapes is the sign of the martyrs’ gained wisdom, because the word meant something else – in the times before the oral tradition was recorded into Arabic script.

It is as faulty as their military assessments and threats.

IMHO the idle threats are part of Iran’s internal power struggle. I wonder whether proving them idle will help the non hawkish to gain more political standing or help the hawks to unite the country behind them.

“I wonder whether proving them idle will help the non hawkish to gain more political standing or help the hawks to unite the country behind them” => Be it some Ahmadinejad or some Rouhani, well, both were cleared to run for presidency by the so-called Supreme Guide. This is BS cooked to deceive both a domestic, as at international level. Good ‘ole good-cop/bad-cop treachery. Don’t be so naive. With a serious distribution of JDAM on IRGC, Basij Gestapo and other services dedicated to oppression of population as much as a decapitation strike on the regime, hawks would have no time… Read more »

@Ilya, while the economic weight shifts – it has not changed yet.

Iranians can only hope that the more prudent nations and Iranian politicians can prevail against the US and Iranian revolutionary guards boasts and warmongering.

Stern : Oh c’mon! Candidates to the “presidency” are approved by the Supreme Guide. Let me remind you what Rouhanni said to the “parliament” when he was introduced as prez : “Ahmadinejad was a wolf in wolf clothes, let me be a wolf in sheep clothes” As soon as the Obongo idiot let the JCPOA money flow, they did the coup in Yemen. It’s pure taqiyya, yet another Hudaibiyah treaty, just like Oslo-II! Did Rouhanni incited Palis into peace, as it’d be the only solution to make their life better? Well, when he met PIJ boss, he told him to… Read more »

@Daeshbags-Sux, the Soviet leaders were also selected and this did not perpetuate communism forever. The same fate is in store for Iran. If not now then later. Until then we work with the saner part.

The Pali problem will only be solved by stopping to fund their lives via UN and EU. They will calm when they have to work like normal people.

Currently perpetuating the problem is their livelihood.

And look what they received on their heads! Nasrallah even promised he’d disarm would UNSC order a ceasefire… He even said that, had he knew IDF’s reaction would be so violent (after he abducted an assassinated 2 Israeli militaries), he would never had started the war. Hey, Hezb in 2006 : 2,000 active fighters, 3-4k in reserve => 2,100+ casualties, about a third being fatalities. Militants from other groups Lebanon lost 20% of its economy at the same time as about 2,000+ in population. 120 IDF soldiers lost their lives Your rain of rockets, mostly 30km range 122mm Grad w.30kg… Read more »

@Daeshbags-Sux, it is our fault that we let the Jihadi use the civilians as human shields. Treat their flesh shields as legal targets after warning them and the people will run away from the Jihadi.

Danny : Khamenei gives $7,500 per Israeli killed, including civilians. They don’t fight according to Hagur Convention’s rule, they fight according to Surat 9. If one of their human shields is killed, it’s not a problem for them, he/she is a martyr of jhad and gains an assured entry into Allah’s paradise… And they’ll even use it as a propaganda asset to charge IDF with massacring civilians as they understood that the dath of non-combatants is not tolerated in the west, but in fact, they don’t give a fück about it! Arafat once declared that 1 million martyrs to take… Read more »

I guess time will tell. But as long as their missiles can reach tel aviv, that is all they need. Once a few pissraeli snowflakes get to eat missiles, the US will back down in a hurry …

The little problem being that Jerusalem has missiles that can reach Tehran and the means to intercept whatever comes, and as usual, the response will be very violent, since it’s the only language the enturbanned morons seems to understand.
In fact, I don’t really understand Israeli state : why do they only retaliate on proxies? Cut the head of the snake and the corpse will die too…
