BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:30 P.M.) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on Turks “hiding Dollars or Euros under pillows” on Saturday to change to Lira to help bolster the country’s flagging economy.
Speaking from the eastern city of Erzurum, he told the crowd: “I’d like to say to those who have Dollar and Euros under pillows, I want you to go and invest to TL (Turkish Lira), invest to the domestic currency.”
The lira has been steadily losing against the dollar in recent weeks, forcing an emergency central bank hike on Wednesday.
Erdogan has vowed to modify monetary policy if he wins election on June 24.
