Amid the continuous deterioration of bilateral ties between the US and Turkey, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said to President Donald Trump on Thursday that a new set of sanctions will be imposed on Ankara if American pastor Brunson, held on terrorism charges in Turkey, was not released.

Ankara will respond in case Washington imposes more sanctions against Turkey, Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan stated on Friday.

“We’ve already responded based on the World Trade Organisation rules and will continue to do so,” Pekcan said, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.

The statement was published just a day after Pekcan announced that Turkey would challenge recently imposed US tariffs at the World Trade Organization (WTO).

It was a response to the US President Donald Trump’s announcement, that he had authorized the doubling of the previously imposed import tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel to 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively.

The move triggered the Turkish lira losing about 20 percent of its value and hitting a historic low.

Ridiculous! Moreover, Turkey is NOT a nuclear power. Considering how Erdog behaves onto partners, even if under attack, I don’t see ANY NATO country willing to fight for Turkey and even less the nuclear powers (USA, France, UK), not even the US giving the codes of the 50 B61 nukes supposed to be stored in Incirlik (IMHO, Yanks have pulled these out, rumours say these are now stored in Greece). Your plan may work in an alternate reality, not in the one we live in. Oh, BTW, B61 is a free-fall bomb to be carried by F-4 or F-16, it’s… Read more »

Stern : the expression is actually “Eat shït and bark at the Moon” 😉 “A WTO complaint is Turkey’s chance. to get rid of sanctions.” => And so what? Trump already pulled out of UNESCO and UNHRC… He sees no problems at re-negotiating trade agreement directly with each country instead of submitting to an international body… IMHO, he’s probably WANTING such WTO complaint to have an excuse to pull out! “p.s. Turkey is no democracy any more. So I do not care.” => Well, nope : degrading the relations between Turkey and the EU at the same time may be… Read more »
