Amid the continuous deterioration of bilateral ties between the US and Turkey, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has said to President Donald Trump on Thursday that a new set of sanctions will be imposed on Ankara if American pastor Brunson, held on terrorism charges in Turkey, was not released.
Ankara will respond in case Washington imposes more sanctions against Turkey, Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan stated on Friday.
“We’ve already responded based on the World Trade Organisation rules and will continue to do so,” Pekcan said, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.
The statement was published just a day after Pekcan announced that Turkey would challenge recently imposed US tariffs at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
It was a response to the US President Donald Trump’s announcement, that he had authorized the doubling of the previously imposed import tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel to 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively.
The move triggered the Turkish lira losing about 20 percent of its value and hitting a historic low.
