BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:18 P.M.) – US president Donald Trump has ousted Rex Tillerson from office as Secretary of State and replaced him with warhawk Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) head Mike Pompeo.
The cabinet reshuffling has been confirmed by Trump himself over Twitter. The US president announced Pompeo’s appointment as the new Secretary of State and Gina Haspel as his replacement as CIA head (the first woman to hold such a position).
Trump offered thanks to Tillerson for his service as US Secretary of State – a position he held for 13 months and twelve days.
Pompeo has openly expressed views on desired US foreign policy objectives (particularly in regards to Russia and Iran) that put him in the category of a classic warhawk in line with the American neo-conservative movement of the 1990s and early 2000s.
