BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:57 P.M.) – Russian air defenses at the Khmemeim Air Base have engaged and destroyed two rockets fired at the key military installation by militant forces operating in northwest Syria.

According to reports, militant forces operating in the province of Idlib fired a salvo of rockets at the Russian-operated Khmemeim Air Base in Syria’s Latakia province.

Sources go on to state that Russian Pantsir air defense systems, detecting the threat, quickly kicked into action and engaged the incoming rockets with cannon fire and radar-guided guided missiles.

Two of the rockets fired by militant forces were successfully intercepted near the airbase whilst at least one missile, falling wide of the military installation, hit just outside the town of Jableh (also in Latakia province).

At the present time, Russian air force helicopters are patrolling the area where the militant rockets were fired from which preliminary reports say to be the town of Bidama in Idlib province.
