The Islamic State has posted a new video depicting the brutal beheading of 31 year old U.S. journalist, Steven Sotloff. Sotloff was covering the war in Syria before he was kidnapped by the same Islamic State militants that beheaded fellow U.S. journalist, James Foley. In the video, Sotloff delivered a message that appeared to be scripted; following the message, he was killed. His captor explained that Sotloff’s beheading is a result of U.S. policy in the Middle East.
The beheading comes one month after the Islamic State issued a message to the U.S. Government, demanding they halt all aggression towards the I.S. in Iraq. Sotloff’s mother issued a statement directed at I.S. leader, Sheikh Ibrahim Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, asking him to be merciful with her son. Following the release of the video, Shirley Sotloff was not available for comment.
Steven Sotloff is the 2nd U.S. journalist to be executed by the Islamic State. U.S. President Barack Obama has not commented on the news of Sotloff’s death; however, he has been encouraged by members of the U.S. Congress to increase the U.S.’ presence in the region to combat the Islamic State.
